About
Sten Greifer is a professional drummer currently based in the Washington, D.C. area. A graduate of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Sten has performed alongside such jazz luminaries as Chucho Valdés and Marcus Strickland. He has received tutelage from internationally-renowned artists such as Dafnis Prieto, Brian Lynch, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, as well as studying with acclaimed drummers in and around DC, Wes Crawford and Steve Fidyk.
Sten’s primary goal as a player is to be as musically versatile as possible while simultaneously injecting his own personal creative touch into every note he plays. While heavily steeped and educated in the tradition of jazz and improvised music, Sten has professional experience playing rock, funk, R&B, pop, country, and a multitude of other musical styles. He also has a particular interest in Cuban and Brazilian music. No matter the genre, Sten takes a personal responsibility in delivering a performance that feels authentic to the style being called for.
With the release of his debut EP In Memory of Every Fleeting Moment, Sten has established a distinct voice as a composer as well as a player. Informed by the tradition of creative improvised music pioneered and cultivated by Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and others, Sten’s music is a special mix of eclectic influences with a distinctly modern feel.
Sten can be seen often performing in and around the DC area, and has also performed on cruise ships and at various venues, festivals, and events across the country. As always, Sten strives to continue evolving as a performer and artist through collaboration with other artists of all musical backgrounds.
